EBMC Teacher Vetting & Scheduling Process Proposal
June 2023 update
The EBMC Program Committee is taking a hiatus from considering new teacher applications. We anticipate being able to receive new applicants in January 2024. Please continue to check this webpage for further updates or information.
If you have been invited to teach by one of our weekly practice groups, have graduated from our STL program, or have been asked by a current core or community teacher to collaborate on a program or proposal, please go ahead and submit your teacher application and agreement. We will do our best to review it and follow up with you in a timely fashion.
March 2022
Updated by Candi Martinez Carthen, Program Director
Current Program Committee (March 2022): Jen Woodfork (Event Coordinator, Staff), Allison Shore (EveryBody, EveryMind Liaison), Jessy Zapanta (Dharma in Motion Liaison), Sierra Pickett (ASL & Access Liaison), René Rivera (MidDay Sangha Liaison), Amana Johnson Bremby (Core Teacher Liaison).
- Anyone who teaches at EBMC, in any capacity, including practice groups, needs to first complete the EBMC teacher vetting process, which will take a maximum of 30 days from when all teacher documents are submitted.
- Read the document about EBMC Structure for Teachers, as well as the other helpful documents on that site that will orient them to what it means to teach at EBMC.
- Submit a Teacher Application
- Sign the Teacher Agreement Form
- If the applicant is interested in teaching with a particular weekly Practice Group, someone from the Program Committee will help to steward an introduction or contact.
- EBMC approved teachers may submit Program Proposals for consideration by Program Staff and the Program Committee. Proposals are reviewed and considered on a rolling basis.
- The applicant will be contacted within 30 days regarding the status of their Teacher Application. Teachers will not be approved if they do not meet the minimum qualifications listed for Visiting Teachers in the EBMC Teacher Roles and Responsibilities policy document.
- After the EBMC teacher vetting process, the practice group leadership team, or a subset of folks who are working on the area of teacher scheduling, will then decide if EBMC would like to invite said applicant to teach. If individual practice groups have their own vetting process, it will occur after the EBMC teacher vetting process; and should not exceed 60 days.
- If after the first teaching, the practice group leadership team feels the first teaching was beneficial for the sangha, the teacher can be scheduled again.
- There is never any obligation for a practice group to schedule a particular teacher. This goes for new teachers and established teachers alike.
- Practice groups may, but are not obliged to, commit to offering a teacher X number of teaching dates, or regular scheduling for a period of time.
- Practice group leaders ask teachers if they are willing to be called upon in cases where another teacher cancels. When a teacher cancels, those are the teachers to call.
- Practice groups strive to schedule the teaching calendar at least 1 month in advance, preferably 3 months in advance.
- Practice groups coordinators communicate clearly and in a timely way with teachers regarding dates and expectations, and teachers should be expected to respond in a timely way. For example, scheduler should give a deadline (e.g. 2 weeks) for teachers to respond with available dates; and teachers should hear back within 2 weeks after giving their available dates. A Scheduler can, though is not obligated to give a teacher a new date if they cancel a teaching date.
- If a practice group identifies a teacher they are interested in inviting to teach, please contact the Director of Programs or the Program Committee to find out whether they have been through the EBMC vetting process, and whether they have been approved to teach at EBMC. If the teacher is new to EBMC, please invite them to apply as an EBMC Teacher.
